Important information

This is a limited benefit policy for specified disease (cancer). It is supplemental, specified-disease indemnity insurance, not major medical coverage, and does not replace comprehensive health insurance. Policies typically include a waiting period (for example, 30 days after the effective date) before a diagnosis is covered, pre-existing condition limitations, and specific exclusions or reduced benefits (such as certain non-melanoma skin cancers or carcinoma in situ). See the policy for full details.

Important: Cancer insurance is a limited-benefit, specified-disease supplemental policy. It is not major medical insurance and does not replace health insurance or Medicare. Benefits, waiting periods, limitations, exclusions and availability vary by carrier and state.

Questions about this topic

Can I get cancer insurance if I've had cancer?

Applications usually ask about prior cancer. A history can make you ineligible or be excluded, depending on the carrier and how long ago it was.

What is the waiting period?

Most cancer plans have a waiting period after the policy starts, and a diagnosis during it usually isn't covered. Length varies by plan and state.

What about other pre-existing conditions?

Conditions other than cancer generally matter less on a cancer-only policy, but read the application and policy.

Can I keep the plan if I change Medicare or health plans?

Generally yes. It's an individual policy separate from your health coverage. Many are guaranteed renewable while you pay premiums; check the renewability provision.

Can premiums go up?

They can if the carrier gets approval for a rate change for a whole class of policyholders, not because you filed a claim.

Does it pay more than once?

Lump-sum benefits are often paid once per lifetime unless there's a recurrence benefit. Treatment benefits may pay repeatedly up to limits.

How are benefits paid?

Paid to you unless assigned, after a claim with a diagnosis from a physician, typically a pathology report.

Are benefits taxable?

Tax treatment varies. Talk to a tax professional.

Can I cancel?

Yes. Many states also give a free-look period after purchase to cancel for a refund. Check your policy.
